Compaq Presario CQ40 most of them pre-installed and built for Windows Vista. Since Windows Vista consume so much RAM and cause overheat, many users want to downgrade to Windows XP prior to Windows 7 release. After Windows 7 introduced, Hp start adding Windows 7 drivers into the download list. Of course now with Windows 8 and Windows 10 dominating most computers OS, I still want to write a post as I think as a reference to whoever need it. Hp already taken one step to remove support for models that over 10 years old there will be no more support including drivers download for the "obselete model".

1. Compaq CQ 40 Variant (AMD and Intel) and series.
There are only 2 types of CQ40, even there are hundreds of them start from CQ40-100 series up to CQ40-700 series and so on. It is either using Intel chipset or AMD chipset. Thats all you need to know. Both model use the same driver except Chipset driver and component, Graphic driver and LAN - Ethernet Driver. You can use the last 2 letters to identify either it is AMD or Intel. for Example : CQ40-xxxTU (xxx is the wild card number) and TU meaning it uses intel chipset.

2. Compaq Presario CQ40 Drivers for Windows XP 32-bit
install all drivers except wireless choose 1 base on your specification.
This driver set only for model with AMD chipset.
This driver set only for model with Intel Chipset.
Audio Drivers:
Audio is a little bit tricky, since IDT is not like Realtek, they don,t pack MS-UAA with the driver installation package so you need to install it manually, you have to follow this step carefully.
1. Install MS-UAA first:
Windows XP, XP SP2: Download (KB888111)
Windows XP SP3: Download (KB835221)
Restart and then install audio drivers below.
2. Install the Audio:
IDT High Definition Audio Codec
(2 drivers, if the first one didn't work, use 2nd drivers)
Download (SP41693)
Download (SP39671)
If resulting in error, ignore it and proceed by manually install the drivers:
Download and install the driver, you will get the error while installing.
Perform the below steps to fix the issue.
1. Click on Start and select Run. Now type devmgmt.msc and press enter.
2. Right click on "Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus" and click Update driver.
3. Select "Install from a list or specific location".
4. Click Next. Then select "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install".
5. Click Next and then select "Sound, video and game controller" from the list.
6. Click Next and then click Have Disk.
7. Click Browse C:\swsetup\sp39671 folder and select the .inf file and click open and Continue with the onscreen instructions.

1. If you have 7 unknown device, download this file, extract, then right lick on the inf file and select install(Machine.inf)

2. Download modded INF and replace original INF in extracted folder,
3. Install and reboot

On 2009, I created a post to list out most of the CQ40 model that available on th HP website, and currently they removed that page and just group all of them base on the wild card number as series reference. (At that time CQ40-700 series are not available).
